Lake Superior: one-tenth of all the surface freshwater in the world, and has a shoreline 1,826 miles long. Lake Superior is, by surface area 31,700 square miles or 82,170 square kilometers, the average depth is 483 ft. / 147 m, with as much water as all the other Great Lakes combined, the deepest spot, 1,332 feet (406 meters), This is the deepest spot in the United States. The deepest hole in Lake Superior is 733 feet (223 m) below sea level (much deeper than Death Valley which is 282 feet (86.0 m) below sea level), so it is the lowest spot on the continental interior of the United States. The lake is about 350 miles (563 km) in length and 160 miles (257 km) in width. Underwater visibility in places reaches 100 feet, making it easily the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes, average underwater visibility is 27 feet (8 meters). Lake Superior contains three quadrillion gallons of water, average annual outflow from Lake Superior into Lake Huron is 70,600 cubic feet (2,000 cubic meters) of water per second. Water retention/replacement span is 191 years.
