Seal Hunting and Sealers hurt Canada & the Canadian people.
The Seal hunt loses money & shames Canada.
Last year, according to the Department of Fisheries Web site, this entire Seal Hunter's economic income amounted to only $12-million, the value of all seal pelts landed at an average $52 a pelt.
Half of that money is eaten up by expenses, so the Seal Hunt merely brings in 6-million dollars. To give you an idea of how small this is, that is only one-tenth of 1% of Newfoundland's GDP. And Newfoundland is among the smallest provinces of Canada, smaller than Rhode Island in the USA in terms of population.
(This year it will be even less, because no one wants to buy their seal pelts, and the price has dropped to between $6 and $33.)
However, the red ink doesn't stop there.
This puny $6-million hunt then costs Canadians more due to the cost of deploying the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) to the seal hunt for 7 weeks each year. Last year it involved 10 vessels, icebreakers, helicopters & patrol planes. This costs the rest of the Canadian people $24 million dollars in ice-breaking services alone.
In addition, a significant part of what the Canadian Coast Guard does is rescue them.
The incompetent boaters and un-knowledgeable sailers get themselves into trouble, ignore weather warnings, get their boats run up on the rocks, and, who know how, but managed to set their own boats on fire, & then need to be rescued. This costs the Canadian people MILLIONS. Over 100 sealers needed to be rescued one year, and recently over 402 had to be plunked out of trouble. Sealers are 3 stooges on ice.
Nearly 1 QUARTER of fishing rescues came from this seal hunt!
One icebreaker, the Amundsen, costs $50,000 per day to operate in winter.
Every year some disaster occurs. Last year, it was heavy ice that trapped sealers for days on end.
DFO calculated the extra costs due to heavy ice at $3.41-million. It also paid $7.9-million to owners of boats damaged by ice. This is Sealers getting government handouts and subsidies, sponging off the rest of the Canadian people whose real jobs are taxed to pay for these handful of "special interest" Sealers that are money-sucking manipulators that live off government handouts and think they deserve entitlements.
This year, the seal hunt caused the drowning of 4 sealers so this 6m hunt cost 4 human lives.
This resulted in more cost to Canadian tax payers due to an unsuccessful week-long 2,800 nautical sq mile search for one of the drowned & his boat involving patrol planes, helicopters & 3 icebreakers.
There is dispute in the DFO having jurisdiction over the Coast Guard.
The inevitable lawsuits and legal bills will easily cost more than this $6-million Hunt.
Millions are spent every year trying to counter bans on the importation of seal products.
4 European countries, usa, mexico, etc have imposed bans on Canadian products due to these bozos.
4 more countries have announced intentions to ban.
Italy & Luxembourg have suspended imports.
The entire EU is poised to ban.
Canada is sick of the Seal Hunt. This is a colossal waste of taxpayers' money.
