Kristin Schweain grew up with a dream of becoming a professional musician. Following in the footsteps of her grandfather, Frederic Spies, who was an accomplished jazz pianist, she began playing the piano at an early age, and wrote her first song "I Need You" at the age of eighteen. She credits singer/songwriters Cindy Morgan, Sting, and Duncan Sheik, and composer/pianists David Lanz and George Winston for sparking her own interest and passion for songwriting. She studied both classical voice and piano at DePauw University's School of Music in Indiana, at Missouri Baptist College in St. Louis, Missouri, and at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.Since 2000 Kristin has been recording and touring nationally and abroad with the Christian pop/rock trio ZOEgirl. ZOEgirl burst onto the music scene in 2000 immediately earning the title as the fastest-selling debut artist in Sparrow Records' history. In 2002, the threesome accepted the Dove award for Gospel Music Association's New Artist of the Year. Over the past seven years, with seven album releases and a string of radio hits, ZOEgirl has toured with acclaimed Christian artists such as Clay Crosse, Avalon, Natalie Grant, Newsboys, TobyMac, and Jump5. Now, as the members of ZOEgirl venture into different avenues, Kristin is thrilled at the chance to express the music she has been working on as a soloist.
"I have always been drawn to piano and piano vocal music. My favorite place is at the piano with my songs, and I can't wait to share them with people and show a more vulnerable side to my life and music." Kristin, who believes in being as real as possible in her songwriting, addressed her own intense struggles with self-esteem in her songs "Plain" and "Skin Deep". These songs were featured on ZOEgirl's albums "Life" and "Room to Breathe." Thanks to her grandfather's legacy, jazz is one musical genre that Kristin cites as another strong influence in her songwriting. She is a long-time enthusiast of jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall. As for this new chapter in her life, she says, "ZOEgirl was an incredible experience that I will always carry with me. I am honored to have shared a platform with Alisa and Chrissy, whom I respect immensely. I will forever be grateful for their friendship. I have gradually entered into a new and deeper place in my writing, in my life and in my faith. My goal is to be personal and candid, sharing my thoughts: the insecurities, the questions, the joy and pain, my love of life and God, all of it. Some days I'm a mess and some days I'm only slightly a mess, but that's part of my own story, and the freedom and opportunity to express it all with my music is what drives me."
