Hi, both the 'faulty' and the working cables were about 3 m in length, so length wasn't the issue in this case. I'm not entirely sure why some microphones need a battery. It could be to do with the type of microphone and whether it can draw enough power from the cable to work. No idea really.

Hi Patrick, sorry for not replying sooner. The extension cable that gave the best results was in fact a no name non-branded cable. The one that I had problems with was a Belkin. However, I suspect that I just had a faulty cable and that other Belkin cables would probably be okay.
