@Mieljean according to Wikipedia, "koekje" means "little cake". So while Koekje only ever refers to Cookies, the work "Koek" means cake (the -je suffix is the dimunitive form). I suspect (though this is admittedly pure speculation) that the word "Taart" is a more modern word.
