About this user

Jojo is a well-respected choreographer, locally and internationally. He specializes in several dance styles including ethnic folk dance, hip hop, funk styles, vogueing, waacking, house, reggaeton, dancehall, contemporary, and salsa. He directs two dance crews: Over the Influence (hip hop) and House of La Douche (vogueing/waacking). These two crews speak to his male and female duality, which he discuses in his recent feature with SAD Magazine (see attachment to view the spread).

As a performer, Jojo has acheived much recognition--performing at high profile events such as London and Paris Fashion Week for designer Nova Dando and La Roux (with his protégé Dangerkat), the 2010 Olympics Closing Ceremonies after-party with INXS, Vancouver Art Gallery's FUSE nights and the Pride Week Celebrations with his vogueing dance crew the House of La Douche, International Dance Day, and more. He has also appeared in/choreographed countless music videos and performed alongside Lady Sovereign, Nelly Furtado, K-Os, Michael Bublé, The Roots, Mos Def, the Beastie Boys, and Grandmaster Flash, to name a few. He's even caught the attention of Madonna and Oprah.

His hip hop dance crew, "Over the Influence" performed their latest creation, "Hip Hop is..." this past September. "Hip Hop is" --Over the Influence's most ambitious performance piece to-date, is a daring retrospective of hip hop's history and impact on ethno-cultural diasporas around the world. Edgy, funny and at times, dark, this highly original story unfolds as four distinct vignettes. "Hip Hop is" explores the struggle to find one's self and the desire to find a place to belong through hip hop, expressed in a fusion of various urban dance styles, music, and spoken word.

Jojo's short film, The Heist, (see promo photo from the film attached), like many of his pieces, is very theatrical. In The Heist, Jojo and his crew members battle against each other to take ownership over a shoe they stole from a high security facility. The piece was originally performed in Vancouver's annual dance showcase, For the Love of It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABz6HwfoNJg . The film premiered last August at the Vancouver Queer Film Fest and featured in ImagiNATIVE Film Fest in Toronto last October.

He would like to teach vogueing/waacking, Jazz funk, house, and possibly hip hop. He is a very experienced instructor, and teaches in multiple Vancouver dance studios. He's been flown across Canada, Seattle to New York and Europe (specifically London, Manchester, Paris, and several Italian cities) to teach.
