About Me:

After 29 years of breathing and 15 years of playing, Andrew McAuley is only now beginning to carve out his own unique niche in music. Taking rhythms from all across the globe, Andrew seamlessly threads them together through means of both improvisation and composition. Both a teacher and a student, he tries to introduce people to different aspects of the instrument as his own perception constantly evolves from his own studies. Versatile, imaginative, and daring to try and accomplish the unaccomplished, Andrew will continue to offer listeners a different sound as long as they continue to listen...and will continue to do so if they don't. Andrew took up the drums when he was 14 years old and he hasn't looked back since. Learning the rudiments from the late Al Miller and knowing the layout of the drum set, he taught himself by air-drumming along with his first drum hero, Dave Grohl. When Andrew finally got his first drum set towards the end of his first year playing, he would sit down and play all of the songs from Nirvana's "Nevermind." This is actually how he learned to play the instrument. Or so he thought... At 15, Andrew started studying with a private instructor named Scott Foley. Scott's playing and teaching introduced Andrew to a different view of how the instrument can be played. After a little less than a year, Andrew stopped studies and began playing in bands with friends, which he continued to do throughout high school. At this time, he was listening to such drummers as Dave Grohl, Jimmy Chamberlain, Kenneth Shaulk, Danny Carey, and it was also during this time that he began dabbling with funk. He had no idea at the time how much that would end up influencing his own sound down the road. In 1998, Andrew attended SUNY New Paltz, where he would not only live for the next three years, but he would also find a new drumming moniker...Kind Beats. Although he neglected his studies during his stay, his time there was extremely beneficial for his development on his instrument. He began listening to a lot of jazz and funk, and found his next inspiration in Medeski Martin & Wood's rhythm master, Billy Martin (who would later go on to be his good friend and mentor). As drummer for the unbelievably versatile and often chaotic Whiskey Dick, Andrew's style changed dramatically. Taking the new sounds he had been listening to, he began to try and weave them into the music through both his drum and percussion parts. The band was heavily into improvisation, and Andrew soon started to find himself most comfortable expressing his ideas in that manner. He was loving performing with his band, and had no thoughts of pursuing a teacher...but that was about to change. In 2000, Andrew found a new teacher in his favorite drummer, Billy Martin. Billy began showing him different ways of viewing the instrument and voicing ones emotions on it. He is also responsible for introducing the most significant thing in his own style, "clave." Inspired by Billy's introduction to afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, Andrew decided to follow his teacher's footsteps and attended the world-renowned Drummers Collective in 2001. It was there that he began intense studies of a multitude of styles. Studying under such masters as Michael Lauren, Kim Plainfield, Memo Acevedo, Frank Katz, Fred Klatz, Bob Quaranta, and Mike Pope, Andrew grew a vast knowledge of the instrumentt. All the while, Andrew continued studying with Billy, covering more expression and polyrhythmic playing. Since completing studies at the Drummers Collective in 2002, Andrew has continued to develop his own style and sound on the instrument. While dedicated to teaching the instrument he still remains a dedicated student to it by continuing study and perform with Billy, and also has recently been taken under the wing of master percussionist, Cyro Baptista. Andrew's goal is to be able to constantly find new ways of showing expression through the instrument. To accomplish this, he is constantly working on both solo and group projects, and will continue to teach as long as he can possibly fit it into his schedule. "Billy, Cyro....these are busy guys. Busier than you could ever imagine! Yet they somehow found the time to take out of their hectic schedules to teach me and show me a whole new view on not only drums, but life. If they didn't do that, I wouldn't have been exposed to an enormous aspect of the instrument. I want to do what they did and still do for me. I want to give people a chance to sit back and observe the instrument in a whole new light."
