@herbienbrian Lol dude I hate to say this but that's not a type 4 that's a type 2 the type 4 looks similar but is somewhat bigger and this engine is usually called the pancake style.

Check your valves it sounds like you have a loose one and it sounds like your timing it too advanced which will cause hard starts and rough idle.

They have Fuel Heaters for this that makes starting up cold easier, looks like its fuel injected so i would look at the injectors for any clogs or gummed up fuel on the tips.

No vw's likes to run cold they all run rough when they are cold but not that bad cause i have many vw engines but they al...

@OBSysteme Does it power on? if yes find out where the tubes are located and find which tubes arnt lighting up or if they are all lighting up just wiggle each one of them, I had a tube in mine when i got it didn't light up so i didn't have sound I wiggled it and now it works great.

If the needle is fine then check the Cartridge and Tubes for wear.

Note one faulty tube can sound like that. As i have a 1962 VM Record player Console with a original Rare Early Record Table in it my Model is 867 which is very very hard to find anywhere.
