I can honestly say I didn't mind the inability to choose a character in story (and challenge tower) mode. It helped me learn who has the cheapest moves (basically everyone who teleports and Sub Zero) I personally prefer Scorpion and, if I had to choose a second character, Kano, Kitana or Liu Kang...
