khancoban have existed in various forms since mid 2004, originally starting as a duo of husband and wife Andre Hooke (lead vocals, guitar) and Jemima Hooke (drums); Andrew Bonnici quickly joined (lap steel, electric guitar, banjo) soon after and since then some others have come and gone. Jim Patterson and Lucas Barbuto joined the group at the end of 2008.

khancoban was keenly received by longstanding label, Half A Cow Records, which released the band's inaugural self-titled mini album. Likening the band's independent spirit to label-mates Crow, Art of Fighting and Tendrils, HAC Records had this to say of the 2006 release:

"Truly unique. In order to express ideas and emotions, they (khancoban) find it necessary to create new forms. We are proud to have these bands in our catalogue."

Half A Cow released the band's first record proper, Limbs May Fall, which led to headline shows Australia wide. The album was received well, with Inpress calling it "an extraordinary debut album... the songs on this record creep up on you slowly, like memories, and take their place in the part of your heart reserved for truly impressive art"

Singer/songwriter Andre Hooke toured with the late Vic Chesnutt, who stated "Y'all real good".

The release of This Block as a single in 2010 led to more shows around the country, including an appearance at the Peats Ridge Festival, where a Faster Louder claimed we were "one of the more left-field surprises of Peats, Khancoban are strongly recommended".

The new single Until It Takes You Over has recently been featured on a number of blogs worldwide (including The Guardian in the UK and I Guess I'm Floating in the US and is available now for free download from www.departedsounds.com

khancoban have just finished recording their new album, titled Arches Over The Sun, which will be released on vinyl, CD, and download through Departed Sounds/Other Tongues on August 12, 2011. It was produced by Nick Huggins and mastered by Casey Rice. It's rad.
