About this user

Born in Portsmouth UK, I moved at the age of four to a new housing estate to the North of Portsmouth, built after the war to replace those demolished by Mr Hitler and his associates. Attending junior and secondary schools nearby I left with a batch of qualifications, though of what use I now wonder. After completing my education, in which art did not feature a great deal, I entered the banking profession. During this time I became an accomplished dinghy sailor representing the bank for whom I worked. I later went on to become both the National and Inland Champion, experiences that would later stand me in good stead for my favourite artistic subject, seascapes.

Leaving banking after nearly 30 years, I then spent some time working in the charitable sector, followed by a period as school administrator. Following my "retirement" from the competitive sailing scene, I decided to fill my time by learning to paint, having done nothing artistic since school. Self taught, and unencumbered by the strictures of any formal art training, my love of the sea, is reflected in my maritime works. This has resulted in over a two hundred original paintings already being sold in the UK, Europe, Canada and USA.

I work in watercolour and also in acrylic, favouring maritime and coastal scenes, but also produce landscapes and other subjects for which I have been commissioned. Watercolour is a challenging medium, but when it all comes together, can produce a seascape in which you can almost taste the salt air, and feel the spray.

I do not yet feel that I have achieved the ultimate in representing these two subjects, but that is part of the challenge that keeps me striving as an artist. As I endeavour to portray that magic something that transports the viewer into another place, perhaps evoking memories of days gone by, I hope my work inspires and uplifts you, if it achieves that then I am well pleased.
