About this user
I have been studying martial arts and playing guitar for about 18 years. Martial arts I have studied formally are Kempo Jujutsu and Taekwondo. Martial arts I have dabbled in and that have influenced me include many arts such as: Hapkido, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Sambo, JunFan/JKD, Kempo, Catch Wrestling, Okinawan Karate, Judo, and others. My main motivation for training and learning is 3 fold: 1 self defense 2 it's just fun...and 3 it's intillectually stimulating and keeps me interested.
I'd like to encourage people to have an open mind in regards to exploring different martial arts, as Dan Inosanto says "everyone has something to offer"
Philosophy: I believe there is a big difference between being a good fighter, and being good at self defense. I also feel both self defense and fighting are equally important, because if your self defense fails, the situation will escalate into a fight (struggle) very quickly. I also believe this is why you don't see many "self defense techniques" in live sparring, simply put, because they were not designed for that purpose, they are meant to be sudden, and unexpected. I believe everything has it's place. I think that the proverbial "truth in combat" most likely lies in the gray area between traditional wisdom and techniques, modern police/military defensive tactics, and the sheer intensity of arts such as sambo/bjj/mma. People tend to think black or white, in a world that is gray. it doesn't have to be one or the other anymore.
