In the summer of 1949 Sergei Rudenko, a noted Russian archeologist, unearthed an astonishing find, a twenty-four-hundred-year-old pile rug of complex design in an unprecedented state of preservation.(1.) The rug's environment throughout it's long history had been ideal: a tribal tomb which climate and fortuitous circumstances had converted into an enormous block of ice. The Pazyryk,as it is called, is one of the most unlikely discoveries in the history of archeology and will remain a key object in the study of oriental rugs of all types, including tribal rugs.--Opie,James,Tribal Rugs,Tolstoy Press,1992.p29.

However self-serving their motives, the thieves UNKNOWINGLY did posterity a favor by cutting into the tomb. The rupture permitted water to fill the chamber, and the frigid winter temperatures locked the grave into a permanent deep-freeze. A great mound of boulders, intended to deter grave robbers, served to insulate the crypt throughout the entire year, permitting us to enjoy these extraordinary artifacts more than two thousand years after their burial.--Opie,James,Tribal Rugs,Tolstoy Press,1992.p30.
