Flash hiders/suppressors do just that... Suppress/hide the muzzle flash. Whereas a simple suppressor/silencer, which btw doesn't really "silence" a gunshot, just reduces that loud boom to a thud I guess you could say. The only caliber that I've seen be close to silent was subsonic 22LR
