Kalmunity Vibe Collective is a grassroots artistic institution, established over 6 years ago to provide a platform for the voiceless, expressed through Live Organic Improv. Their musical style, which is 100% improvised, blends flavors of R&B, hip-hop, afrobeat, funk, reggae, soul and jazz. The lyrics tell the story of positivity, social awareness and political consciousness through a variety of styles like dub, hiphop, jazz, slam and song. The result is incredibly creative, original music that is rich with cultural, spiritual, social and present-moment expression. Kalmunitys unique approach to music has both astounded and inspired their ever growing audience. Since its inception at Montreals Sablo Kafe, the Kalmunity Vibe Collective has been devoted to high-quality musicianship and creative professionalism. The consistency of their two weekly series has created an artistic community within the larger Montreal community. The collective represents artists from different genres of musical, vocal and cultural backgrounds, creating new styles of music and live lyrical expression. There are close to 100 different musicians in the collective from the Montreal artistic community and we are connected through our artists to a great number of musical acts, performers and an eclectic audience.We also have developed successful artistic and cultural events throughout the city like the Intimate Sky performance series, Kalmunity Jazz Collective weekly series, Live Organic weekly series, the Kalmunity Black History Month Series and New Years Eve Cultural Celebration. We also continue to play an active roll in the community around us by participating in a number of benefits and workshop programs. In 2009 Kalmunity performed at Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, released two live recordings and moved their Tuesday night weekly series to a new location, Le Consulat. Kalmunity has also released The Talking Book in 2007, an anthology of poetry, photography and philosophies, published by Cumulus Press. The collective was featured in two CBC live broadcasts with Lillian Allen and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and in 2008 a short film based on the founder and the inception of the collective called Jahsun placed second in CBCs Digital Diversity Short Film Competition. The collective is currently completing a dvd compilation of live performances and is planning a Canadian tour in 2010. Mandate Kalmunity is dedicated to promoting and perpetuating the potential of art as a tool for communication and activism for social, political and environmental consciousness, respect and harmony. Our platform for expression is live organic improvisation, which incorporates music and poetic expressions in both French and English without any limitations on musical or poetic genres.
