It's a swing bridge. The shack is where the bridge operator is when the bridge is being opened for a boat to come through, which from the look of the bridge isn't that often. The span with the shack pivots in the middle.

An automatic train control system would likely have prevented the VIA crash on the 26th but there is no such thing in Canada.

Interesting that they didn't fit a NZ socket for your kettle. This is surprisingly fast for 3'6" gauge and the locomotive is very quiet. Is it regular practice in NZ to have the driver on the right?

Was this at Burlington West? It's a great place to film VIA going fast. I used to work near there and would go down to the tracks to watch trains on my lunch break.

Where there are barriers such as at this crossing the horn shouldn't be mandatory but the rules were made when crossing gates were rare. It should be changed so horn use would be at the driver's discretion where the crossing is protected by barriers. Many in the Toronto area are like this already.

I think the new cars will have pantographs instead of trolley poles. A lot of routes (Bathurst, St. Clair for example) have had pantograph-compatible overhead installed.

I hate this ad. It has none of the humour and irony of traditional IKEA ads. It's sappy and sentimental and the woman's voice is annoying. I expect something this bland and generic from Home Outfitters but IKEA has no excuse for this kitsch.
