This is the way they learn it the third grade with the Primary Mathematics. So by fifth grade they can divide easily. Better to start with the after information. Then you don't even need the before model.
And the bar models themselves are great for multi-step problems and a great tool to analyze the problem and draw it visually. They are great as a step towards simple algebraic problems.
