"One day, my boss Jimmy Lovine gave me a CD of a new artist A&M Records was developing. It was a unique voice, with a teardrop turn of a phrase, a few Mozart-sounding piano arpeggios and some of the freshest pop-songs-with-a-twist I had heard in a long time. Confined to my blast headset in the middle of an uphill run, the opening piano riff of what was to become 'A Thousand Miles' stopped me in the tracks. I was over-come with emotion, with possibility, and inspiration. It was Vanessa Carlton.
[...] I became her producer and we set out to arrange the songs, bringing in a deeply talented and diverse band and the best strings playng today. A part of me bacame Vanessa, as I dug deep into my own musical grab bag to suggest colors for her songs. Soon, a constant stream of perspiration met up with our inspiration. Orchestrations became reality, brilliant vocal passages were stitched together discussing transitions, guitar licks, bass lines, string parts and drum fills brought her debut album being.
Then, as if a rocked was launched, came the video - the innovative 'traveling piano' was catapulted by MTV. Then, radio caught fire. Sunddenly, A Thousand Miles was everywhere - constantly. All the hard work began to pay off as Vanessa Carlton's first song became number one in America for four weeks. Then, number one in faraway Japan. Then, as Be Not Nobody hit the street, her first week in realese brought her to number five on the Billboard chart - one achievement after another.
At the core of all the sucess is just plain Vanessa - an outgoing, funny, optimistic girl who simultaneously is dark, reflective, questioning and philosophical. In these seemingly opposite sides lies her soul. From the joyous 'Ordinary Day' to the mournful pain of 'Paradise', from the jazzy fusion of 'Prince' to the classic melodies of 'Pretty Baby'. Be Not Nobody marks the arrival of an important new voice in music today. A lot has been writen about Vanessa, the ballet girl who found herself at the bottom of a piano."
