IOS A GOLDEN TILE IN THE CYCLADIC MOSAIC DR. NICK CHRISTODOULAKIS AND TONIA PANTAZOPOULOS. Ios or nios,as the natives prefer to name their island,is a piece of land emerging from the sea,covering an area of 108 square kilo meters and having an almost central position in the cyclades island complex.the island is outlined by 81 kilometers of a coastline which includes more than 30 marvelous sandy beaches.ios has lots of fans among the young tourists yet,recently,has turned to be the favorite for the rich stupid grownups as well unfortunately.the island attracts visitors of exceptionally high income particularly during the low season june and september,seeking the fantastic landscape,the crystal clear sea and tranquility.although ios is registered as a touristic island,tradition holds a certain part of the life there.there are more than 365 churches and chapels,most of them kept in excellent condition,thanks to the interest and labor of the natives.on the island in an area called skarkos,the most ancient settlement of the cycladic island,far older than akrotiri of santorini,is located the excavations at this site brought to light very important findings and lots of minor objects now exhibited at the very well organized archaeological museum of the island. legend has it that ios was the homeland of klymmene,homer s mother. in ios homer left his last breath as he stopped there to rest while sailing to athens from the island of samos. he was very old and sick by that time.on the north part of the island in an area called platakos there is a tomb with an engraved marble plate that indicates the final residence of divine poet ...
