The present day shows with appalling clarity how little able people are to let the other man's argument count, although this capacity is a fundamental and indispensable condition for any human community. Everyone who proposes to come to terms with himself must reckon with this basic problem. For to the degree that he does not admit the validity of the other person, he denies the "other" within himself the right to exist..

Scientists are quick to point out that there is no one single place in the brain that is solely responsible for what we call the act of thought. Instead, they are learning that a human being " interacts with the environment as an ensemble. " What we call mind is a complex orchestration of biochemical and neural regulatory circuits that operate as a whole. The inference is that " mental phenomena can be fully understood only in the context of an organism's interacting in the environment.
In other words, the act of thinking combines sensations, feelings, emotions, and abstract reasoning in an embodied way. " I participate, therefore I am " -- a far cry from Descrartes's detached autonomous mind that thinks from above and afar and is not sullied by the physicality of experience.
Neuroscientists are not alone in their reappraisal of disembodied rationality. A new generation of biologists, philosophers, linguists, psychologists,and sociologists are beginning to enter the fray as well, offering, a new embodied approach to understanding human nature that is rewriting the human story and laying the foundation for an emerging empathic era. What unites the work across the disciplines is the belief that we each exist only in relation to the other.

Empathy is a delicate balancing act. One has to be open to experiencing another's plight as if it were one's own but not be engulfed by it, at the expense of drowning out the self's ability to be a unique and separate being. Empathy requires a porous boundary between I and thou that allows identity of two beings to mingle in a shared mental space.
