My The Lost boys info :
Much of the lost boys was shot on location in around the coastal community of Santa Cruz called Santa Carla in the film, and also the Pogonip country club was the location for grandpas rustic lodge style home, also in Santa Cruz, thousands of locals residents were called upon to star in the lost boys as extras for board walk scenes. Over 2000 were signed for nighttime work and was the largest film production ever brought to the area up to that time .
A blending of comedy and horror mixed together works well, although im into the darker, ambient, nighttime scenes, surreal dream like effects where they used contrasts to make that eerie unsettling effect, which works well and was shot perfectly.
As for the daytime scenes they were totally different they wanted to capture a subtle feeling of danger and when combined looked great.
My favorite character in the whole film has to be the character David, the character of David performed by Kiefer Sutherland has a very eerie horror to him, all innocence and happiness has dissolved into a dark humor and his hunger to kill, played with major attitude and a big chip on his shoulder, looks excellent, which makes this character out of the whole cast stand out, he has some of the coolest lines in the movie, as many reviews and critics say this was Kiefer's finest hour.
Although i love all the characters in the film. Each character in this film is great from the security guard right down to the lost child in Max's video store, each character brings his or her own bit of magic, even the Santa Cruz locals who they used as extras were good, and not forgetting the two dogs they used, looked and performed great in the film, it just wouldn't be the same without them, now would it.
All these characters made it what it is, a true cult classic .
My favorite scene and i know a lot of fans like the Run DMC camp fire scene when the Lost boys vamp out for the first time or the part when David makes Michael hallucinate and turns the rice into maggots but my favorite segment is where the sun is lowing and the roller coaster passes by then the shot of the lone surfer leaving the sea then the scene moves into the lost boys cave, i think this scene is shot beautifully and with the dark ambient score in the background it goes together with it perfectly and looks visually superb .
My favorite quotes from the film are : 'One thing about living in Santa Carla i never could stomach all the damn vampires' also Death by Stereo but theres so many great one liners in this film its hard to choose a favorite to be quite honest 'Drink some of this Michael be one of us' and 'Jesus my own brother a god damn shit sucking vampire well you wait till mum finds out buddy! ', i can go on for ages reeling them all off as there all so excellent .
Although The Lost boys didnt have much dialogue in the film , a few lines here and there just adds to the mystery of there gang, they never give to much away to who they are or where they came from and i think that mysterious stranger approach is perfect to each of there characters . i think the whole English gypsies type look they give to the group fits in perfectly and there no rules , do anything without any consciences anarchy kind of look on life finding extreme thrills while unbelievably dangerous thrills to say the least to any mortal when showing them hanging from the train bridge and just letting go into the mist below without fear or trepidation .
From start to finish the music and score is perfect and fits in so well with the whole vibe of the film , from the track 'Cry Little Sister' to 'Don't let the sun go down on me' and many songs used by Inxs and jimmy Barnes sound great and the stand out cover version of people are strange by echo and the bunny men originally sang by the doors is awesome , but thoughout the whole film it certainly had a Doors style vibe to it, also from the big poster in the lost boys cave ,they have homed in on the whole lizard king Jim Morrison type of out look on life was given to The Lost Boys. The Lost boys cave has a certain Jim Morrison feel about it as does each lost boy character in some form or other .
The score was composed and performed by Thomas Newman and what a perfect job he did on this film the whole ambient, gothic sounds and eerie surreal rhythms, used in certain scenes, works perfectly throughout the film .
The Lost Boys will remain forever the greatest vampire movie ever made.
