No copyright infringement intended ----- I own nothing. I owe my gratitude to all those ladies & gents who constantly dedicate their time and passion, keeping us informed with enticing posts on their wonderful websites & blogs. A heartfelt "Thank you" to Paula Byrne for unveiling this portrait. My reaction seeing it was as strong as hers and this is the result of few sleepless nights spent trying to connect the Westminster literary dots from Jane's books ;)
All the pictures and information presented in my video can be found scattered around on Internet. The clips are from Becoming Jane and music is from "Lost (in) Austen" *wink* ;) Another choice was "Twenty (200) Years Later" from Becoming Jane, but it did not fit very well.
Cork Street is in the West End of London, in the City of Westminster. It is well known for the commercial art galleries that dominate the street. Cork Street is within walking distance of all the major street addresses in Sense and Sensibility (also in P&P, Emma and Mansfield Park). Immediately to the west and running parallel to Cork Street are New Bond Street and Old Bond Street.
Bond Street is the only one that Jane Austen used in two of her books: in Sense & Sensibility is the address of John Willoughby (see my post on Becoming Jane Fansite: Once upon a December) and in Emma, the place where Mr. Elton takes Harriet Smith's portrait to be framed.
Emma (1815) - Chapter 6: "Did you ever have your likeness taken, Harriet? said she: Did you ever sit for your picture? Harriet was on the point of leaving the room, and only stopt to say, with a very interesting naïveté, Oh! dear, no, never."
"You have made her too tall, Emma, said Mr. Knightley. Emma knew that she had, but would not own it, and Mr. Elton warmly added, Oh, no! certainly not too tall; not in the least too tall. Consider, she is sitting down -- which naturally presents a different -- which in short gives exactly the idea -- and the proportions must be preserved"
"The next thing wanted was to get the picture framed; and here were a few difficulties. It must be done directly; it must be done in London; the order must go through the hands of some intelligent person whose taste could be depended on; and Isabella, the usual doer of all commissions, must not be applied to, because it was December, and Mr. Woodhouse could not bear the idea of her stirring out of her house in the fogs of December."
Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!!!
