Recovery of this waste energy and the rest of the waste energy in the exhaust is the key to improving the over all efficiency of the internal combustion engine.
The Wankel rotary engine is the only mass produced four stroke internal combustion engine that does not use an exhaust valve. The exhaust port opens wide to the atmosphere with nothing in the way. Even thou the rotary engine combustion chamber shape is not entirely conducive to the most efficient combustion never the less the Wankel rotary combined with an exhaust turbine has the potential to be the most efficient internal combustion engine of all.
It matters not if the engine is used in a hybrid or not. The same principles apply. In fact a turbo compound ICE used to power a generator is easier to design as the engine runs at a constant RPM and power level.
It is criminally irresponsible to ignore this waste energy in the exhaust given the current and future cost of fuel. This should be a high priority of companies building internal combustion engines as well as Federal governments around the world.
