Michael Jackson may not have been "the first" to break racial barriers, but he certainly carried on the tradition. Imagine if he hadn't had those first videos on MTV, like Billy Jean, and if he hadn't separated from the J5 after the 70s and become a superstar in his own right, then you can see more clearly that (one) his stardom was not aimed at just African Americans liking him, but EVERYONE liking him, and because he was so successful, breaking racial barriers was just a side note of his success ! So it wasn't just Michael who was breaking racial barriers, there was and still is a whole movement in the U.S. to break racial barriers and Michael Jackson was and still is an important part of that movement
