2011 Kia Rio. Start Up, Engine, and In Depth Tour. Now that the 2012 Kia Rio has undergone some significant updates, reviewers think this small car is a lesson in practicality. It's available as a hatchback and sedan, has seats that will be comfortable for most drivers and passengers and comes standard with features like steering wheel-mounted audio controls and USB and auxiliary jacks that shoppers with smartphones and iPods crave.
Drivers on a budget who want a small car with pep in its step may not be satisfied with the Kia Rio's performance abilities. Test drivers say its 138-horsepower four-cylinder engine seems like it would be one of the most fun-to-drive options in the class, but overall, they find it's more practical than powerful. That means enthusiasts who don't want to pay more than $20,000 for their next car should step up to the Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf, while drivers who simply want a good commuter car will be quite pleased with the Kia Rio.
Previously, the automotive industry didn't consider the Kia Rio a competitor for highly-ranked affordable small cars like the Ford Focus or Fiesta, but now that Kia went back to the drawing board, automotive writers think Kia finally has a contender on its hands. "All said, the 2012 Kia Rio looks to finally be a front-runner in the subcompact segment," writes Edmunds. "Along with models like the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent, the Rio is a car that should immediately come to mind."
