i figured out how to open the gate... after you defeat that reaper you close the pipes with the flowing lava by breaking something that was holding the lid up then something happens after which the gate opens

True gamers don't discriminate between games, they discriminate between gameplay(60% of total), replay value(30%) and graphics(10%)... Well, at least that's what I do... Plus, you really can't compare a First Person Shooter with a Sandbox game, they're two very different things.
