Artists Statement

As a native Icelander, I feel a deep connection to the land and my heritage. My work is a reflection of Icelands past and present: the past, rooted in Nordic myth and legend; and the present with its modern technology and complex social issues. I choose to work with wood as my medium. I have a deep respect for its natural strength and beauty. It is a living, breathing material. Each piece has its own unique history and experience. I use many different woods in my works. My preferred medium is Siberian driftwood. I carefully select and collect these pieces from Icelands shorelines. After taking them home, I will observe the wood for days, sometimes months, until I envision what it wants to become. It then becomes my responsibility to help the piece find its true expression. I select other materials very carefully for their qualities and color, and then import those not available to me in Iceland from other countries. Some of my favorites include bog teak, cherry, mahogany, lime, walnut, and animal bone.

I had dreamed of studying woodcarving since my childhood. When I was in my twenties my mother presented me with a gift; a certificate for a woodcarving course, that altered and enriched my future as an artist. This art form and I were a natural fit. I later went on to study further in Iceland, Austria, and in England under the master woodcarver, Ian Norbury. I have been fortunate to have numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, and take great pride in watching the pleasure my art brings to others viewing my art.

My motivation is driven by the love of carving and the pleasure of sharing it with others. My goals go beyond my own achievements. Sculpting with wood is an underdeveloped, and perhaps unappreciated, art form. My desire is to share this creative expression and medium with others to develop a broader community of woodcarvers. I have taught numerous woodcarving courses in Iceland. It brings me great joy to see others, especially older students, find their talent and expression through the wood. I strive not only to develop more artists, but better artists, as well. To that end, I have brought other master carvers to Iceland to share their talents and experience with students—including my master, Ian Norbury from England, and famed wood sculptor Rumerio Giuseppe from Italy.

My works range from contemporary pieces involving guitars and computers to sculptures that remind us of a different time and place. I particularly enjoy making masks from driftwood. They say so much about our humanity and the faces we show to the world. My wish is that my works will bring out emotions in others ranging from joy and laughter to being moved deeply to the point of tears. After twenty years of wood sculpting, I feel I am coming into my own and truly maturing as an artist. The best is yet to come.
