The group was formed in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner, with two friends, Kam Lee and Rick Rozz, under the name Mantas (a tribute to guitarist Venom). They recorded a demo of four tracks called Death by Metal, the band changed their name to Death and edited another demo titled Reign of Terror. In March 1985 recorded their third demo, Infernal Death. Chuck moved to San Francisco, Rick and Kam later founded the band Massacre.
In San Francisco, Chuck knows the drummer Chris Reifert of Autopsy and guitarist John Hand. The group had the backing of bassist Steve DiGiorgio of Sadus, in 1986 they recorded a demo that they get their first record: Mutilation. The group signed with Combat Records and the company a year later is recorded Scream Bloody Gore, his first album.
1988, Chuck was separated from John and Chris, and Rick Rozz joined the band back together to join him Terry Butler on bass and Bill Andrews on drums. Leprosy and record their second album. After that, Rozz left the band and replaces James Murphy.
The band released the album Spiritual Healing in the tour 1990.Durante Chuck was expelled and replaced by another vocalist. The training will not last long as Rozz Butler and Andrews recruited to revive the draft Massacre and James was part of other bands like Obituary and Testament.
1991, Chuck returned to the group by recruiting Paul Masvidal, Sean Reinert and Steve DiGiorgio. The launch of fourth album, Human, in charge of the label Relativity Records. The group also recorded their first video, Lack of Comprehension. The following year they released the compilation album Fate - The Best of Death.
1993, The next album Individual Thought Patterns. Gene Hoglan on drums for Dark Angel, Andy LaRoque in Diamond King's guitar and Steve DiGiorgio on bass in Sadus were commissioned to create it. Thus recording the second video, The Philosopher. In 1995, Death signed with the company Symbolic Roadrunner Records, and released, again changing the group members, except Hoglan; came Kelly Conlon on bass and Bobby Koelble on guitar.
Chuck Schuldiner left the group for some time to spend on a new project, Control Denied. Shortly after recording the first album by Control Denied, Chuck Schuldiner was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The singer continued with Death and joined the band of musicians on guitar Shannon Hamm, Scott Clendinin on bass and Richard Christy on drums. In 1998, under the Nuclear Blast label, released their latest album: The Sound of Perseverance.
Schuldiner's illness worsened, and several musicians, magazines and record companies auctioned instruments in order to finance their treatment. After the disease was diagnosed by Chuck, Nuclear Blast released in 2001, two jobs alive: Live in LA (Death & Raw) and Live in Eindhoven, recorded at Dynamo Festival 1998.
On Thursday, December 13, 2001 Chuck Schuldiner died.
