About this user

Born in New Bedford MA, John's interest in music began at a young age. John loved the many varieties of music that ﬂowed through his home and started his musical venture singing in choir in the second grade. Although he was interested in music it was not what he loved to to. John was sure that he was going to be an artist.

As he grew so did his interest in becoming more involved with music. John remembers his ﬁrst endeavor in to playing a musical instrument was being taught to play "Baby What'd I Say" from Ray Charles on guitar by his father.

It was in the sixth grade that John had his deﬁning moment which made him decide that he would be a professional drummer. It was the drum solo from "YYZ" on "Exit Stage Left" by Rush that had ﬂoored him. So much so that he told his middle school friend that he wanted to be a drummer and that he was going to learn to play that solo. His friend just laughed at him.

After banging on buckets for a few years John started taking music lessons in the early 1980's at Constantino's Music Store in Lawrence, MA. On Christmas day 1983 John's parents asked him to run out to their car because they forgot to bring in a few gifts. He remembers the moment fondly as he opened the back hatch and found his first drum set - A cobalt blue set with wooden hoops made by Ralph Eames.

Shortly after, John decided to participate in the high school music program in order to continue his musical education as well as resume taking private lessons. Toward the end of his high school career, John was impressing his peers by playing the solo that decided his fate. After high school John attended the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston MA where he received several scholarships and grants.

After graduation, John subsequently started his professional and teaching career. Playing with musicians such as Melvin Butler (Brian Blade), Eric Normand (Rhett Akins, Toby Keith), Doug James (Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard), Robbie Merrill (Godsmack), Abe Laboriel Jr (Seal, Paul McCartney), Rick Derringer, Clyde Beatty and Cole Brothers Circus, Jon Finn (Berklee Professor, Boston Pops, Boston Symphony Orchestra), Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Mike Keneally), Jon Ross (James Cotton, Duke Robillard), Matt Stubbs (Charlie Musslewhite), Troy Gonyea (Kim Wilson, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tony Lynn Washington), Bruce Bears (Duke Robillard, Tony Lynn Washington, Queen City Kings), Mark Early (Roomful of Blues, Queen City Kings) and many others.

John has since played with several fantastic musicians and bands and steadily plays with Mirage, the Bob Pratte Band, Tom Keller & Co, Michael Fioretti Band and Erick Preston's Purple Haze. Currently, John has a residency on Sunday nights at Strange Brew Tavern in Manchester NH with Acoustic Duo and a jam on Tuesday nights with Coupe DeVille.

Even with playing an average of 220+ gigs a year and numerous recording sessions, John still finds the time to shape the minds of budding musicians by teaching drum, bass and guitar lessons throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Currently he is teaching privately from Music Workshop in Salem NH, Souhegan High School in Amherst NH and in the privacy of student's homes from Central New Hampshire to Northeastern Massachusetts.

John finds teaching rewarding in many ways and also finds that it keeps him on top of his game. To him there is nothing better than preparing his students to take on the music world and reach for their dreams. His pride comes from knowing that he has helped his students become the first seat in their jazz band, make All State or graduate the New England Conservatory, University of New Hampshire, University of Massachusetts, and Berklee College of Music.
