Twenty first century schools will be increasingly outward facing, looking beyond traditional boundaries and working in partnership with a range of other services, according to a seminar organised by Bristol City Council's Children's Services Scrutiny Commission.

Supporting families and empowering communities will be central to success, helping schools achieve their core mission of excellent teaching and learning.

Schools will work in partnership with children, young people and parents; other schools, colleges, learning providers and universities; other children's services; the third sector and employers; and the local authority and its Children's Trust partners.

The seminar, held on 29 April, to learn from best practice in this area, heard from local experts. They discussed how to take this agenda forward and how the local situation fits into the national context.

Speakers included: * Lynn Raphael Reed, Professor of Education and Social Change, University of the West of England * Ray Priest, Principal, City Academy Bristol * Elisabeth Gilpin and Mary Lawrence, Headteacher, St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School * Pat Rogers, Headteacher, Ilminster Avenue Nursery School * Peter Bentley, Extended Schools Partnership Manager, North Bristol Area One

Ray Priest, Principal of the City Academy, said: "There is a strong focus on the family at the City Academy. Currently, about 600 parents of some of the 1,300 students are also using the school to study."

Pat Rogers, Headteacher, Ilminster Avenue Nursery School, said: "In our community, the creation of a mural provided a home for community conversations about the value of learning."
