(Question asked by "prodigyshadow" in BoRhap comments.....here is my reply) Your question deserves to be answered. FM most likely contracted HIV @1979; unfortunately the virus's existence was not known to science at that time. When science caught up to what was going on, a test was developed and the public was informed..this was '81-84. FM was tested @'84, was positive for HIV, immediately stopped his promiscuity, and began taking medication as it was being developed; however the medicine was still in the experimental stages/not very effective; he developed the full blown disease AIDS @'87 then continued taking experimental drugs until 10 days before his death '91. Magic Johnson tested positive for HIV in '91; at just about that same time, much more effective drugs were developed; so, Magic was most fortunate having these new/ better medications available. FM died. Magic lives. I was working in the medical profession at the time; our hospital was informed in '82 but that doesnt mean the whole world became aware in that year; it was a long process of education/research/development of effective treatment. Mary Austin, FM's life long girlfriend who inherited his massive estate, at FM's direction (before he died) created The Mercury Phoenix Trust which is a charitable organization that provides monies for research/development/education @HIV/AIDS

Until science comes up with a cure for any new fatal disease, thousands suffer and die; it was much the same in the late '40's and 50's with the disease polio; until Salk invented the vaccine, thousands of children suffered and died & many more were left crippled for life; now, that disease is almost extinct; lets pray that someday we can say the same for HIV and AIDS.
