A great novel you might be interested in is "Monte Casino" by Sven Hassell. It's well written and narrated by a Danish conscript in the Wehrmacht. It shows the very ugly side of war, and interestingly show how his unit was comprised of many foreigners; such as French Foreign Legionnaires

Eye for an eye killings are the most common war crimes in both WW1 and WW2. Don't try to understand something you never will.
