@stanprag That is Jackie Phelps, and I spoke to his widow last year to ask her about it. She told me that he built a lot of his own guitars, played them a while and then tore them apart and made a different guitar out of the parts. She also said none of his guitars still exist. Too bad.

Rarely heard but one of Ed's best IMHO.

Even though it was almost always true, Chet never thought of himself as a better picker than the other guys on stage. He absolutely loved picking with other pickers. What a nice guy he was!

@MrJellyrollBaker If I am not mistaken, that is his Martin D-28 with a bigsby neck. He played this guitar for many years including in the movie "From Here to Eternity".

Ya gotta love that ending!! Two of the world's best banjo pickers, but who caps the jug,.....Jackie Phelps!! What an overlooked picked! Somebody (and Im sorry, I forget who) once said, "Jackie could play 'Little Rock Getaway' on a Jew"s harp", and I believe that's true.

Besides the singing, the best part of the video is the classic overlays. Chet, Little Jimmy, Tex, Roy, Kitty.....Classic!

Chet was never a stage hog. He surrounded himself with musicians of every kind and he let THEM shine. Most of them recognized the fact that they were playing in Chet's sandbox. To be that good and also humble and generous, what a gift he was. Truly a gift.

@katyekel Chet had a great sense of humor. When I saw him (2 nights in a row) in 1972, in Indy, he said, "Hi. I'm Chet Atkins. I wanted to tell you that because I get mistaken for Tom Jones a lot." Hilarious!

Sometimes newer and slicker isn't necessarily better. Nothing like looking over my dad's shoulder in our '55 ford and seeing the green glow from that Philco AM radio and hearing the Grand Ol' Opry through one 6" speaker. You can't digitize that. Thanks for the song, clicks, pops and all!

Chet refered to this guitar as his Octo-bass. He put two light gauge bass E and A strings on a guitar. He had to modify the bridge to get the intonation close and he always said it was a b----- to play. Never the less he made it sound like it was meant to be. My hero ( and your's too, Doug) I'll...

I know very little about Jerry except that a family friend gave me an album about 1967, or so, called Jerry Shook plays songs made famous by Chet Atkins. He is on the cover of Chet's album Superpickers. Is he still with us?
