Thank you, John, for this tribute which reflects our respect, affection, and gratitude for Frank and Muriel. The brotherhood of Ware men and their families still lives after all these years, thanks to their vision and hard work.
The position of the lower end of the bottom race is offset from that of the race above, in line with the offset position of the first hole on the pickup wheel. As a result, the pickup wheel in its hourly cycle will capture only a single ball from the bottom race plus all of the balls in the race above. After the 12-strike, it will pick up one ball. After the one-strike, it will pick up one from the bottom plus the one that has struck the hour and come to rest in the race above, etc.
I believe Plexi (clear acrylic) is better in this application. Lexan is tougher for applications like window panes in bad neighborhoods, but plexi is actually harder, i.e. it breaks more easily but is less vulnerable to scratching. Lexan is messier to cut because the edge is harder to clean up if the offcut chips congeal into a "beard" in the saw, which is often with either material..
Brian, not only an unusually elegant rendition for a prototype, but a testament to your geometric skill and confidence that it sports no adjustable screws to regulate the capture points of the pallets.
Very nice work! A nice, rich grain look can be brought out in birch ply with a rubbed-on mixture of medium brown Trans Tint dye and a 1-pound cut of dewaxed shellac. This raises the grain and must be sanded and given a finish coat, so it’s not for wheels. But wheels can be given a compatible color with Transtint and plain denatured alcohol, with no effect on running surfaces (see my Quarterdeck Striker for both effects). Transtint is expensive but gives fine results with only drops needed.
While accuracy in these things is not the prime aim, it is surprisingly consistent on average even though the escapement speeds varies with the tension in the maintaining loop. The two aquarium pumps provide reliable pressure, but introduce moisture in the pistons which cause occasional stoppages. I am exploring better sources of air supply. My 500 characters are nearly gone, but feel free to send a private message on my channel if further questions. Glad you like Pneumachron. Regards, John
