This is just brilliant! At first, the ensemble sound is much like the George Shearing Quintet. Hawes does some block chording here, too, much like Shearing, but he's far more percussive. What a talent Hampton Hawes was! Check out "All Night Session," which is one of Hawes' greatest albums.
Fascinating stuff. Hampton Hawes was really something in in the early and mid-50s. Pepper has a lighter, more facile sound here than later in his career when he had more depth and emotion. Thanks.
