Tolkien fan. I read and reread his works, academic and literary, and never tire of them. I still have sudden bursts of powerful emotion when I read certain scenes or phrasing - as if I somehow have a deep personal connection with the story. I am enthralled by Tolkien's notion of the 'Cauldron of Story' - a never ending mix of new and old ingredients, subtle blends, surprising flavours, feasts, famines and creative seasoning, all over a slow constant flame that flares and fades with the days, nights and the seasons.What do I think of J.K Rowlings and Harry Potter? The Potter phenomenon has made me try to articulate the essential differences with Tolkien. Many Tolkien fans I have known avidly read Potter - and I just don't get it. Some commentators say 'time will tell' if Potter becomes a classic, but, I think it is already found wanting. Perhaps the most single insightful assessment of the difference between the two (can't remember the commentator) is that Potter has fallen into a Gnostic heresy - "knowledge is power". While for Tolkien, it is always the moral character and grace of persons that are the great powers. Even then, there is still so much more to what Tolkien has achieved - his embrace of the primordial stuff of culture big banged into a marvellous 'creatio ex nihilo', sweeping us up in a cosmic ride. Rowling captivated our awe starved generation with a well timed and well placed supernova spectacle... Nice, but...
