I take it that there aren't any "I sold it on e-bay" type companies in Japan where you can drop off the stuff you want to sell, and they sell it on their site, collect the payment and pay you (minus their fee)?

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that there are so many old buildings in Japan, that 'add ons' have become part of the culture, and now is considered an acceptable (or even fashionable) style.
