If you are looking to buy a Yorkie, only buy them from a reputable breeder. The mother should be at least two years of age and should weigh at least 5 lbs. Any one who breeds a younger or smaller female is not a responsible breeder. The dad's size doesn't matter, usually, but he should be within the breed standard, which can be found on www.ytca.org.

Never buy Yorkies from a dog broker or pet shop, these pups are born and kept in horrendous conditions and buying them perpetuates the cruelty to this and other breeds.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TEACUP, OR TEENIE, OR ANY OTHER WORD FOR EXTRA SMALL YORKIE. There is only one breed of Yorkie, some are just smaller than others and the smaller the dog the higher the likelihood that they will have medical issues.

If you are buying from a breeder, ask them if they have had their males tested for Livershunt. Livershunt is a genetic disorder that can result in the death of the dog. Any responsible breeder should test for it and should offer a medical guarantee for the puppy, for at least one year.

Yorkies, because of their size and activity level can develop diabetes. Please make sure that your baby is eating regularly and keep some Nutri-Cal on hand just in case they aren't. This can happen to a yorkie at any age, even without warning signs, because that is what happened to my baby. He loved to play so much that he didn't eat a whole lot, unfortunately it was too late for us, but it doesn't have to be too late for you.

Yorkies are special dogs, but they are also hard to train and demanding little babies. If you can not commit to caring for them, to give them the attention they demand while having patience as they are being trained, then do not buy a yorkie.

If after all that you still want a yorkie, please check with local shelters and rescues first, there are a lot of great pups out there who just need some love and often times they are much further along in potty training than a new puppy.
