2 B Bop Hard
Bebop, Hard Bop, Free Bop, Post Bop, live Bop is the best Bop. Spread these Jazz Jamz generously on toast, savor with a dark brew. When the Jam and Joe are done, press auto pilot, light the toro, sip your finest, "straight - no chaser" :D
Experienced pilots can customize the settings for optimum speed, performance and handling. Newbies need to buckle-up and stand by for take-off. Your PHD in the key of blue will come at you like a Matrix up-link from live, improvised conversations between the greatest musicians of all time.
Miles To Go
A giant who changed the sound of jazz at least four times in a lifetime spanning four decades of creating music starting with bop, hard bob, cool, modal and electric jazz funk (fusion).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Davis (May 26, 1926 -- September 28, 1991) Miles Dewey Davis III May 26th 2011 - Happy 85th Birthday,
Stone Cold Trane
John Coltrane poured his soul out into his tenor and soprano saxophones. Each time he did, we were awed and thrilled. His torrent of sweet sounds and sublime epiphanies transformed us like a Matrix up-load. This Stone Cold Trane will touch you with his intensity, his emotion, and his devotion. Savor the experience.
My aim is to collect the best of Trane as a leader and in collaboration w/Miles, Ellington, Monk, Hartman, Dolphy, Rollins, and others. Watch and listen to the pearly clips I've discovered in the great YouTube cloud. YouTube loves John Coltrane.
Had he survived, John Coltrane would have turned 85 years old on Sept 23, 2011. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Coltrane, September 23, 1926 -- July 17, 1967 You can hear more of John in my Miles To Go and Sacred Jazz play lists. He's amazing!
Fat, Free, Fuzed, Fonk
Here's the thing, together these styles (Free Jazz, Jazz Fusion, & Jazz Funk) contain extraodinary explorations of jazz improvisation and ensemble jam sessions using electric, electronic and esoteric creative influences. On this station I hope to collect the best examples. In the words of a notoriously funky explorer "free your mind and your a** will follow". :0
Ella & Louis Together
This playlist will make a great Valentine impression with chocolate strawberries, Champagne and a single perfect American Beauty Red Rose. Just Sayin'.
Some times it takes two. Often two is better than one. These two were really one. Louis and Ella together are amazing. There are many fine duet pairs, but these two set the standard for artistry.
Ella adored Louis throughout her career and you can hear it in her scatting and imitation of Satch's gravely voice on lots of her solo work. I had always appreciated Mr. Armstrong but Ella helped me learn to love him madly. His perfect vocal harmonies, counterpoint trumpet and solos, bridging a chorus or introducing Ella's angelic voice are flawless.
Just sit back and listen to two great artists who loved working together. You'll see what I mean.
Vocal Ease ~ The LH&R Legacy
If you're in the dog house on Valentines Day, this is the playlist to school you on the facts of life. What to do when the main thing ain't the main thing no more. Find a new one. Don't let the blues get you down. :D
Lambert, Hendrick & Ross perfected the Jazz singing style called Vocalese. Think of 3 unique voices that weave poetic inspiration into crazy, Bluesy, Swingin, Bopin, can't-get-this-song-out-of-my-head tunes. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just spend some time with this playlist and I guaranty an awesome, life changing epiphany.
.
L,H&R set the standard with lyrics and vocal arrangements that swing to Basie and Ellington or Bop to Miles, Monk, Coltrane and Horace Silver. The Vocalese recipe takes the improvisational phrasing called Scat from Satch and Ella. Writes lyrics for the finest instrumental arrangements and improvised solos in Jazz. Then, marinates it all with Swing, Bop and witty cool Blues. All this, served hot with live vocal arrangements of harmony, melody and dissonance. Sublime!
Late in life Jon Hendricks penned note for note lyrics to Miles' Freddie Freeloader. The Hendricks version featured Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau and George Benson as guest vocalists. Freddie Freeloader blazed new trails on Miles' Kind of Blue (The Greatest Jazz Album of All Time). Miles' all star line-up performed completely improvised solos from himself, Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Wynton Kelly. Hendricks' all star line-up sings his own witty/true-meaning-of-life-lyrics using McFerrin to tinkle Kelly's piano solo, Jarreau to ooze Miles' trumpet solo, Hendricks to channel Coltrane's Tenor Sax blast and Benson to fire up Cannonball's Alto Sax response to Coltrane. It's f-in amazing. Try some, it tastes good and it's good for you.
'Less we forget; Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, Mark Murphy, Al Jarreau, Kurt Elling, Dee Dee Bridgewater are all keepers of the flame. But none of this would be without the pioneering work of "Saint" Louis (Satchmo) Armstrong and The Queen Angel, Ella Fitzgerald? The Legacy of LH&R is the perfection of Vocalese. If you don't know, then you need to! :D

Song Byrdz
To celebrate Valentines Day I've asked these ladies to teach us a little about Cupid's bitter sweet sting.
Angelic/Thrilling voices is No. 2 on my 7 point list for great music. These ladies HAVE IT. All else turns "a whiter shade of pale". My SongByrds are; Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Betty Carter, Peggy Lee and a few of the ladies they've influenced.
To me, each of these women redefined the art of Jazz and Blues Vocal interpretation. I never get tired of listening to them. I am glad that YouTube allows me to re-live some of their greatest performances. They are AMAZING!
The list will grow, so if you don't see your fav, send me a clip (with your POV defending her nomination :D). I'll feature worthy contenders :D.
I promise to say a few words about each in the near future. But, I'll start with Abbey Lincoln because I think she's under appreciated. Her work with Max Roach on the Freedom NOW Suite was ground breaking Jazz Protest Theater. In this playlist you'll find 4 great vids of a live performance of We Insist, Freedom Now, from German TV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Insist!_%E2%80%93_Freedom_Now. Her solo work, films, and creative vision were uncompromising. On Sat Aug 14, 2010, at the age of 80 she walked into the light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbey_Lincoln - I have one simple request - Remember Abbey Lincoln (RIP).
Frog Princz
Let's be completely honest about this. Real Men don't Celebrate Valentines Day. We tolerate it as the price of keeping the main thing the main thing. If we don't learn this lesson early enough we end up singing the blues like some of these Froggy throated gents. Don't know about the rest of you Frogs but, I like to keep my swagger steady. So my advice to you is, pay close attention to what these Frog Princz are preachin'. ;D
Angelic/Thrilling voices is No. 2 on my 7 point list for great music. Song Byrdz out number Frog Princz 5 to 1; but these Frog Princz HAVE IT. The IT I'm talking about is a Thrilling Voice. Some can be sweet, some decidedly mellow, some super cool and some gravelly. But all know how to turn a phrase. This is where I come to take lessons that prepare me for a good showing in my shower Grammy Fantasy Awards.
Just like I never get tired of listening to Song Byrdz, I never get tired of listening to these Frog Princz. Johnny Hartman, Billy Eckstein, Nat King Cole, Mark Murphy, Al Jarreau, Kurt Elling and of course, The King, Saint Louis Satchmo Pops Armstrong, I am glad that YouTube allows me to re-live some of their greatest performances. I promise to say a few words about each in the near future. They're all AMAZING!
The list is short for a reason. So, if you don't see your fav, send me a clip. Your POV defending his nomination counts, so BRING IT! (:D). I'll feature worthy contenders for all our listening pleasure d-_-b
Ellington Everywhere
This year, Granny Clause surprised Santa with a new surround sound boombox for the Sleigh. What does Santa pump up the volume for? Ellington Everywhere! Try some Nutcracker Swing. It tastes good and it's good for you. *[:D}
The Loneliest Monk
For those who know, Thelonius Monk needs no introduction. His sound is immediately recognizable and revered. It's too sad if you don't know, but not too late. (Voy a reglar :D.)
So, please allow me to introduce The Loneliest Monk. This play on words came to me a year ago while testing palabras rico to enshrine my playlists on Pandora and YouTube for this great jazz composer. I thought I was pretty clever until today 8/4/2010.
While Googling "my" title, what do I find? A Time Magazine jazz feature of the same title from Feb 28, 1964 and other references to this play on words. 'Alls I can say' now is - great minds think alike :D.
Read the great Time piece here http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,873856,00.html
Now, without further delay: The original works and covers of the great jazz composer Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917 -- February 17, 1982).

Ipanema Girl Luvs Me
I think that Cupid launched a special arrow at Antonio Carlos Jobim. What better combination of gifts for Valentines Day than the Angelic Voices of beautiful women from Brazil singing Jobim poetry about Love.
Many things about Brazil are intoxicating. Samba and Bossa Nova make it easy to day dream of rapture. I asked myself WHY? and came up with this. Because they weave together poetic lyrics, angelic voices, gorgeous melodies, sexy saxophones, sweet sticky-fingered keyboards/guitars, jungle fever percussion and soulful Latin rhythms. All of that is before you see the videos of stunningly sweet Mermaids performing this great music against the back drop of sun, sea, sand, bikinis and night life.
I love the idea of Brazil so I call this playlist The Ipanema Girl Luvs Me. Enjoy over 70 of the finest Bossa Nova & Samba pieces penned mostly by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
What more can I say but, YUM! :D. It tastes good and it's good for you too! O gosto é bom e é bom para você também! Tiene sabor rico y también es bueno para usted!
Tuesday March 8, 2011. Celebrate Fat Tuesday, Mardis Gras & Carnival w/ friends around the world. In honor of this liberating day I give you Beautiful Women from Brazil. Tomorrow we repent! :D
Afro Cuban Jazz
Today I want to honor the memory of Latin Jazz Great Tito Puente. (April 20, 1923 -- June 1, 2000) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tito_Puente.
Thx to Chip Boaz for reminding me that this is the 11th anniversary of the day that El Rey de Timbale walked into the light. You can check out Chip's great blog, THE LATIN JAZZ CORNER at http://www.chipboaz.com/blog/.
I was lucky enough to be on the dance floor shining my belt buckle to Tito's rhythms in Feb 2000 in Nyack, NY just months before he passed. Prior to that I danced to his great band on New Years Eve 1997/8 at The Grand Hyatt, NYC. Had a great time! But didn't realize it could be the last time. Tito was forever young.
Latin Jazz is an amazing synthesis of Cuban, African, Brazilian, Bebop, Blues, Soul, Salsa, Cha Cha, Mambo, Big Band, Dance Music. The musicians are amazing in how they blend complex rhythms, percussion, piano, brass, reed and vocal improvisations.
Something is woefully wrong with Grammy Academy members that eliminated this vibrant art form for the 2011 nominations. IMO the Grammys no longer identify true art and innovation in music. It's a popularity contest.
We don't need the Grammy's to find great music anymore. Just search YouTube or iTunes or Pandora or Amazon or Google and you'll find music that you love. The digital age of music is flourishing. The Grammy tragedy is just a last gasp for attention by a dying old school industry that has become irrelevant just like traditional music production houses.
Los Rumberos
Well it's almost Valentines Day so I guess it's time to push the Christmas Salsa to the back of the playlist. So, I'm back to featuring the best Rumba, Mambo and Salsa that I can find on YouTube. Please send suggestions.
Just go to the end of the playlist if you can't wait until next year to hear the great holiday Salsa I discovered for Xmas '11. Anyway Felice Navidad! y Prospero Ano Nuevo (2012). In a Tropical Christmas we celebrate CrisMa until El Dia Del Los Reyes (Jan 6, 3 Kings Day). Please send your suggestions for songs I should add. They'll make a great Xmas present for me.
Santana
I love Carlos Santana's work on guitar. But his greater contribution to music lovers came from the introduction of Latin percussion and Afro Cuban rhythms in rock music of the 60's and Afro Brazilian rhythms in Jazz/Rock Fusion of the 70's. This was a pioneering collaboration with all of the early Santana band members.
Five albums stand out as milestones in the evolution of the music of Santana: 1 - Santana (aka Lion optical illusion cover) 2 - Abraxas, 3 - Santana III (Space Odyssey/Pegasus cover), 4 - Caravanserai, and 5 - Welcome.
These albums take you on a musical journey from the rawness of an electricfied barrio to a soaring latin rock opus, to searing Rock Salsa to a sophisticated, electrified, Afro Cuban/Brazilian Jazz Fusion suite and a final resting place in a spiritual exploration of electric Afro-Brazilian Jazz Fusion.
Santana, the guitar hero, won Grammies in the 21st century but his best work, with his greatest bands, came in the 60s and 70's. The whole genre of Latin Rock may not exist today if not for his guitar work and the latin and rock percussion work of great bands members like Jose (Chepito) Areas, Mike Carabello, Mike Shrieve, Armando Peraza, Coke Escovedo, James Mingo Lewis and Airto. Many other great musicians and singers collaborated in producing the music these bands created. But the core sound was Carlos' guitar and the Latin percussion drummers.
Take a listen and tell me what you think.
Jimi Hendrix
My "Experience" started with The Band of Gypsies. Since that personal discovery I've explored a lot of the great music and musicianship that Hendrix blessed us with in the 4 years of his brief but extraordinary career. This playlist catalogs the best of what I could find (so far) on YouTube. It's a challenge to keep it up-to-date because so many videos get deleted. Please forgive any gaps. I'll replace as much as I can, as quickly as I can.
His live performances shocked, inspired and awed his contemporaries. His recorded work expanded the boundaries of what musicians and recording engineers would do in the studio from that point forward. His style of playing, the sound of his guitar, and the lyrics of his songs inspire, influence and amaze musicians and audiences even today.
There was no one like him before or after. Millions have been and will be influenced by the great music he created. Forty years later, many musicians cover his work and pay homage to his style of playing by trying to recreate and extend his sound.
Thx to all of the YouTube people who've shared their love of Hendrix' work. Many visit my channel while searching to expand their Jimi Hendrix experience. Thx to all visitors for comments, friending and subscribing. We share a love of Jimi that sparks an instant connection and a global experience.
On Sept 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix (RIP) walked into the light. Sept 18, 2010 was the 40th anniversary of that tragic event. As we honor Jimi's memory together, I leave you with this Q: Are you experienced? 9/9/2010
Radio Free Dylan
Dylan's words speak for themselves. He had a lot to say about love, mostly about breakups. The top 10 Dylan songs for Valentines Day.
I have a few words for those who'll ask, what's Dylan doing on a Jazz Channel? You all know about my 5 out of 7 rules for great music. Right? (See my channel page for the background story.)
1. virtuoso musicianship [NOT Dylan, though many would argue]
2. angelic/thrilling voices [DYLAN's SPIT ROX. His thrilling twang illuminates the poetry.]
3. witty/soulful and blue lyricism [A MASTER of wit & the blue in the soul of the human condition.]
4. tight arrangements (complex or simple) [UNPLUGGED & ELECTRIC. Always tight.]
5. imaginative/commanding improvisation [NEVER SANG A SONG THE SAME WAY TWICE]
6. Swing, Clave, a sahweeeet funky groove (u know! that thing that puts a swagger in your step) [NOT Bob, we listen to Dylan to tap our minds not to tap our feet]
7. the artist(s) must do it live [THE MAN IS A TOURING MACHINE]
That's 5 out of 7 folks. Nuff said.
But . . . there is one more thing. Dylan's music is a 20th Century Rock Canon that few Jazz Artists have touched. If there are any Jazz men/women out there who want to help me put a band together to cover Dylan, BRING IT.
Divas Rock
We interrupt this program to announce that Whitney Houston has walked into the light. Feb 11, 2012 at 3.55 pm at the L.A. Hilton. She took the final step on the eve of the 2012 Grammy's. More later.
This playlist is under construction. Like my Song Byrdz playlist does for women Jazz vocalists, I want this playlist to present the finest women vocalists in Rock, Soul and Pop. In addition to my 7 principles for selecting great music I need to add one more criteria to this list. The new test will be that the artist must have set a new standard or created an innovative sound for vocal interpretations and/or writing in the genre. There are so many angelic/thrilling voices in popular music that I need this test to sort out the truly great from the very very very good. I'm just getting started so would love to have recommendations and opinions. I'm starting out with Areatha, Alicia Keys, and Chante Moore. But the plan is to add Whitney, Mariah, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Janis Joplin, Beyonce, Chrisette Michele and others as research and recommendations reveal the contenders.
Let Freedom Ring
A wise man (me) once wrote "our diversity is HIS glory, HIS glory is our unity". Diversity rules the human condition. At the same time it makes the human condition very unruly. This irony has tragic consequences. Why can't we all see that diversity is HIS way to Let Freedom Ring?
This Jazzy playlist explores music of protest with voices, people and events that serve to unify humanity. Here, the music, words and voices forge a compass whose true north points the way to human dignity. Follow this compass to Let Freedom Ring.
February is Black History Month in the U.S. The history of black people in America is a shinning example of perseverance in the timeless universal struggle for human dignity. Sixty years later the civil rights struggle is still the lamp piercing the darkness to Let Freedom Ring,
We all lead richer lives because of the courage, the brilliance and the moral leadership of Martin Luther King - The 1963 I Have A Dream Speech and other voices of freedom are included in this playlist to encourage all to Let Freedom Ring.
9/11 - The World Trade Center, NYC; The Pentagon, Washington DC, Flight 93, PA. The shock, the tragedy, the helplessness; the bravery, the brotherhood, the unity of spirit. The recognition of evil, the pursuit of justice, the need for constant vigilance. Never forget how and why our nation, the world, and compassionate humanity reunites around events like this to Let Freedom Ring.
Mobile Tech for the digital lives we lead.
WHATEVER? Yes! Where ever, whenever, however and with who ever we want. Digital media lets us "do it in the road", on the run and in the cloud. Digital music, video, mobile and social networking technologies make The J@zz Herald possible.
On Sept 11, 2006 Pandora gave me the tools to find great music and build personal radio stations. I thought I was in heaven. Then in 2008 I discovered live video clips of my favorite artists and new artists on YouTube. I could barely contain myself. Find what I like and see what I like dead or alive (so to speak).
In 2009 I found I could share my passion with the world by knitting together a blog based on MySpace 2.0, streaming YouTube, linking to Pandora and weaving Twitter through all of it to tell stories, share discoveries, make announcements and meet people around the world. Wow!
Also in 2009, all of this went completely mobile. Now we can all "Do it in the road" as the Beatles intended :D So, this playlist features digital media, mobile and social tech. "It tastes good and it's good for you too".
With Valentines Day just around the corner, Santa has passed Rudolf's red nose on to Cupid. Get the jump on tech gifting with a virtual visit to CES 2012 with The Jazz Herald, right here on Jediknightrider's Channel.
