Final Fantasy XIII is the story of the Fal'Cie, godlike beings created from crystals and residing within them. Individuals marked by the Fal'Cie for a greater destiny are known as l'Cie, and are granted power to aid them in fulfilling the tasks set by the Fal'Cie. These tasks are revealed through focuses, visions that the l'Cie experience. L'Cie have a limited amount of time in which to complete their focus, and if they fail they become beasts known as Cie Corpses.
The game takes place in two locales, namely Pulse and Cocoon. Both of these have their own Fal'Cie, who have clashed many times in the past. The planet Pulse is relatively primitive, with its inhabitants being mainly tribal communities. Pulse is home to strange and diverse wildlife, with dinosaur-like animals travelling its plains and dragons flying overhead.
Cocoon on the other hand is a technologically advanced world created by the Fal'Cie thirteen centuries ago. It floats high above the surface of Pulse, with its Fal'Cie providing all that humanity requires to survive. Cocoon is densely populated, and ruled over by a theocratic government known as Sanctum. Sanctum prohibits Cocoon citizens having contact with Pulse, and quarantines any who do with the aid of their army PSICOM.
Sometime before the beginning of the game, Pulse's Fal'Cie is transported to Cocoon, contained within a structure that comes to reside in the coastal city of Bowdam, where Serah, Lightning and Team Nora reside. Serah Fannon, younger sister to protagonist Lightning and romantically involved with Snow Villiers, comes into contact with Pulse's Fal'Cie and incidentally becomes a l'Cie herself.
The game begins with protagonist Lightning, a former Sergeant in PSICOM, infiltrating a train which is carrying prisoners for quarantine. With the aid of Sazh Katzroy, an acquaintance from Lightning's military service, she manages to stop the train and disrupt the transport of prisoners. However this does not appear to be her ultimate goal, she seems to be searching Hanged Edge (the location where prisoners are transferred through) for Pulse's Fal'Cie, likely seeking aid for her younger sister. Team Nora, a vigilante justice group led by Snow Villiers, join the battle to save the prisoners and inadvertently come across Oerba Dia Vanille and Hope Estheim (who's mother falls in the battle taking place, leading to his resentment of Snow). Through a chain of events Lightning, Sazh, Snow, Vanille and Hope find Pulse's Fal'Cie, and they themselves all become l'Cie.
In the beginning of Final Fantasy XIII, all of Pulse is pretty outraged with Cocoon, and they organize an assault against Cocoon, or which Lightning leads. This leads to a quasi-revolution. It's said that Cocoons strengths as a fortress are susceptible to infiltration, which furthermore is frightening to the citizens of Cocoon as this could open up Cocoon to possibly falling from it's place in the sky.
Later they meet up with Oerba Yun Fang, another l'Cie who is working for Cocoon's Sanctum along side Cid Raines.

FFXIII eidolons history...
Shiva
----
Belongs To: Snow Villiers
A series favourite, she returns as an Ediolon in Final Fantasy XIII as the twin sisters Styria and Nix. Her, or rather their first HD appearance comes with new abilities. Shiva is now able to control both water and ice and is able to transform into a motorcycle via the 'Gestalt' system. Her summoner, ironically named Snow, no doubt favours this ability.
Shiva's signature move 'Diamond Dust' returns and promises to chill her enemies to the bone.
Odin
--------
Belongs To: Lightning
The mighty Odin, a staple to the Final Fantasy series, returns as Lightning's Ediolon. In Norse mythology Odin is the chief god and ruler of Asgard. In previous FFs Odin is seen atop his mount Sleipnir.
Steedless in FFXIII Odin opts to transform into Sleipnir and is ridden by Lightning. Previously Odin was unaffiliated with an element, however now appears to posses both lightning and wind abilities. Odin's ultimate move Zantetsuken returns, no doubt to the detriment of his foes
Brynhildr
------------
Belongs To: Sazh Katzroy
A newcomer to the series, she debuts as the Ediolon of Sazh Katzroy. In Norse mythology Brynhildr is a Valkyrie and Shieldmaiden who was punished by Odin. Brynhildr cursed to sleep on a couch surrounded by fire awaited her rescuer. Later on she also died by fire thus it is not surprising her role as the new fire summon.
Brynhildr transforms into a F1 racecar during her 'Gestalt' and her ultimate move Muspell flame, or realm of fire, is sure to incinerate her foes.
Hecatonchires
-------
Belongs To: Oerba Dia Vanille
Hecatonchires debuts in Final Fantasy XIII as the Ediolon of the bubbly Vanille. In greek mythology Hecatonchires is said to possess one hundred hands and fifty heads and were the children of Gaia and Uranus. They were extremely strong and ferocious, hurling mountains sized boulders at their enemies by the hundreds. Not surprising Hecatonchires element is earth.
In 'Gestalt' mode he transforms into an armoured suit reminiscent of Magiteck armour (FFVI) and Machina Maw (FFX-2). His concept is Shooting Blaster and ultimate move 'Gaia Salvo' is sure to overwhelm his opponents.
Alexander
---------------
Belongs To: Hope Estheim
This powerful Ediolon is summoned by Hope and is of the holy element. Previously Alexander has taken the form of a giant mobile mech as well as a castle. Little is known about his origin however, his power has been proven as her successfully fended off the formidable Bahamut.
Alexander's 'Gestalt' mode is unique as he forms a massive fortress surrounding his foes as opposed to a vehicle. His concept is that of a tactical commander, obliterating his foes with his laser beams and ultimately 'Holy Judgement'.
Bahumut
------------
Belongs To: Oerba Yun Fang
The king of dragons returns in FFXIII as the Ediolon of the tenacious Oerba Yun Fang. Seen throughout the series Bahamut has taken many forms, though his power is undeniable making him worthy of his title as king. In FFXIII Bahamut decimates his foes with his destructive claws and devastating attacks.
With 'Gestalt' Bahamut takes to the sky mounted by Fang, smiting his foes with the destructive power of his signature move, Mega Flare.
