Jazz, as we know, is a language, and few cities speak it as well as Detroit. Beginning in the 1920s, Detroit was home base to cutting-edge ensembles like Jean Goldkette's Orchestra and McKinney's Cotton Pickers.
Once we began to export individual musicians, New York really began to listen -- how could anyone not notice guys like Milt Jackson, Yusef Lateef and Wardell Gray?
But the richness of Detroit's musical tapestry is defined not only by those musicians who leave, but by those who choose to remain and who continue to imbue Detroit's developing players with skills and attitude. It is this nurturing which ensures Detroit will continue to play a vital role in jazz. Older musicians helping younger musicians -- it's the Detroit way.
On Detroit Jazzstage, we spotlight musicians who add to that richness. Each musician or group speaks the language of jazz with a distinctive accent. They have a story to tell, and our goal is to let you hear that story.
We hope it adds value to your life.
