Imagine an incredible journey. Maybe you envision a voyage in a large ship sailing across the seven seas. Or perhaps you instead see yourself scaling colorful mountains in a fantastic, unknown land.

Some treks bring us to the other side of the world. Others take us within the depths of our own minds. Ten years ago, some 350 artists began their own journey. Much like the 10-year voyage of Ulysses, this journey brought these artists both challenges and uncertainty. Their quest?: Show their art to the public.

The artists' work created Artomatic, a free art festival in Washington, D.C. By 2009, Artomatic had grown from a relatively small arts expo (housed in
an abandoned laundromat) to an event that hosted 3,000 artists under the roof of a nine-story skyscraper.

"Journey to the Center of Artomatic" tells these artists' story.
