ten gallon aquariums do work for rats as long as there are not too many in the cage. i am currently building a topper to add MUCH more space to mine. that way the bedding stays in the cage (and not all over the floor) and they still get good ventilation and lots of climbing space

picking up a rat by the base of the tail is fine for short periods (i.e. no longer than it takes to move it to a new cage, keep it from going under something, or until you have your hand other then to support them.) ask a vet...they'll tell you the same thing. a few seconds is fine no longer.
