Joey, Shelby & Griz have been RAW fed as of 4/5/08 & Natural Reared as of 1/09.
We rescued an approx. 6 y/o MALE Rat Terrier July 12th 2010 we named *Spanky*, he took to the RAW diet right away(only took 2 days).
"The dogs that die from heartwom are the dogs that are being vaccinated, fed commercial food and are being treated with supressive drugs for every little thing that comes along.
Disease, illness and symptoms come from within. A relatively healthy animal will not be susceptible to those things. So the ultimate answer is not to prevent heartworm (or distemper or parvo or whatever), by some artifical means, but rather to work on improving and maintaining good health. To the degree that you can imporve your dog's level of health, disease of any kind becomes less threatening."

~~~ Jack Russell Terriers(JRT's) the breed & The adoption of our FIRST JRT-Joey ~~~

I had become INTRIGUED w/ JRT's like a year before my husband and I got our FIRST JRT Joey, I had seriously expressed a desire to adopt one into our family(Joey adopted 7/13/07). One week I got it sooooo stuck into my head that I wanted a JRT and started to research what breeders were nearby us and their litters.
Finally found one w/ 3 JRT's still waitin to be adopted and immediately made arrangements to drive-up to meet them a few days later! That is when my research began on the breed, I got an eye full at * JRTCA site* , we learned they believe themselves to be a BIG dog in a small body, they had a strong hunting streak in them(therefore should really never be left of leash), are GREAT w/ children though DO NOT tolerate mistreatment - the children HAVE TO BE taught to be nice to them and be supervised(YOU stay aware of any growling), ACTIVE high energy furkids that REALLY need a secured fenced yard(wood fence-JRT's have been known to climb chain link fences *see fav. video here*) & must be kept busy doin stuff - if they get bored enough they will either escape out an open door first chance or WILL find a way/make a way outta their yard. PLUS much more learned!!
Our 2 are kept busy w/ goin w/ us out when weather permits them to stay out in the van, goin to pick-up the kids from school, going to THEIR 4 stores, time w/ us at the park, long walks at the river, rough play w/ their rope bones in the house and they *love* playing w/ us in the backyard w/ their JUMBO bouncy ball.
When we brought home Joey AND Shelby they were switched COLD TURKEY to "Solid Gold Healthfoods for Pets", we thought that a HIGH quality pet food was THE BEST we could do for our precious JRT's. Then came the decision of which food to switch them to from their puppy formula, I wanted a HIGH protein food that DID NOT have any *extra* vitamins(overload their systems), nasty preservatives or chemicals that would eventually hurt them. A friend in Lo. started to talk to me `bout the RAW diet.
After much reading we learned that commercial diets(kibbles) and treats act like candy/sugar packed cereals in a child cause the kibbles contain corn & grains. Corn & grains when digested breakdown to carbs/sugar(basic knowledge), a furkid has NO NEED for carbs/sugars or fiber nor do their bodies naturally have the tools to accurately digest corn & grains NO MATTER how they have been cooked or NOT COOKED. Furkids were made to get their energy from uncooked fats & proteins. Corns, grains AND cooked meats ARE EXTREMELY HARD on ALL furkids systems!
When we take Joey & Shelby out we are always asked what breed they are and when we Jack Russell the people stand in awwwwwwwwww & compliment on how CALM they are and we always tell them it comes w/ firm discipline and their diet- the RAW diet plays a BIG role in their calmness. We now carry w/ us info. cards we made w/ a few sites for them too to also learn `bout JRT's the breed AND the RAW diet.
From personal experience we QUICKLY learned that their diet does play a MAJOR role in their attentiveness to us and non-HYPER energy.
Griz for being a SENIOR lg. breed(YOB `96) he has GREAT mobility even during COLD times.
My husband & I have COMPLETELY fallin IN LOVE w/ JRT's!!!!

100% RAW fed

~~~~~ A *puppy* should NEVER get any bullystix or beef tendon chew/treat(they are *TOUGH* and take ALOT of REPETITVE chewin). Puppies still only have their "baby teeth" their teeth are not strong enough to handle such chews/treats. Giving a puppy either of these chews/treats is like giving a human baby a steak!!!!
When Joey & Shelby were puppies I NEVER gave them anything like bullystix(of any size) or beef tendons for chewing on. For chewing I got them Puppy Nylabones, Puppy teething keys(Petco & Wal-mart), Puppy Kongs & knotted rope bones.~~~~~
