Ken had a long and struggled music career as an improvisational jazz musician before being forced into taking small gigs to make a living. Though extensively trained in blues & jazz, his first love for Van Halen afforded him the precipitance to play the cute riffs behind all of the pop music he was participating in.

Ken and Steven had been good friends for a long time, so when Steven asked him to start a band he figured that at the time, it was his best shot at making some money with music. Though Steven could really neither sing well or play the guitar, he had managed to scrap together a small following comprised of family and close friends. That at least paid for the pay-to-play gigs in Hollywood.

Shane never really liked Steven but after several failed attempts at making a successful band he figured it couldn't get any worse. While drumming for other moderately successful start up bands, his 80s rock grounding often made his ideas unpopular, and his hesitance about most things drove people away. Steven, for some reason, kept pursuing him as his drummer.

Finally, Don was asked to join for his smashing good looks and for owning a hollow-body bass guitar, both of which would bring marketability to the band. Having failed at everything for a decade of his life, Don brought with him the sense of humor the band sorely needed. With Don joining, the band immediately shot from nowhere to next to nowhere within weeks.

Los Angeles, with its overdeveloped pool of me-too musicians and higher tolerance for misfits, provided the ideal environment to try out this odd foursome named Jack the Vain.

In the summer of 2005, Jack the Vain released an EP titled Hangman under their former band name, the Steven Kim Band, in collaboration with up and coming producer Rudy Haeusermann. The band is currently in preproduction for their debut album, while selectively playing gigs as time permits.
