This is a GREAT song; shades of Ray Charles or Delaney & Bonnie. Very southern sounding for a bunch of New York boys. Sadly, the album went in several different directions.

One of their best songs. It should've gotten more airplay.

This was supposed to be the follow-up to "San Francisco" but Lou Adler insisted the Mamas & Papas do it. Scott is a great guy, a reluctant star, and what a voice!

The chorus and verse lyrics are over different melodies toward the end.

Scott also wrote "What About Me?" which Anne Murray recorded, and is co-author of The Beach Boys' "Kokomo". He also did the original "12:30", which is different from the M & P version

@the12thwoman he sure does. I think the sounds he made in Cincinnati were the blueprint for 'southern rock'; blending rock, soul, blues, country and gospel.

Lonnie ought to be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. This album was so influential it's been reissued ten times. This foreshadowed southern rock.

Probably the greasiest slide solo ever recorded!
