About this user

I've been kicking around all things Drum & Bass for 20 years now (on & off!), and in that time have seen all it's mutations, good and bad. There are times when I couldn't listen (1997's ensuing Tech Step scene being one instance), and times when I couldn't get enough. The one constant in all this time has been my deep love for the music.It started with my first music purchase at the age of 14 with Jean Michel Jarre's 'Oxygene'.I'd already heard Kraftwerk's Autobahn at one of my Dad's friends house, and the Vangelis scores for both 'Chariots Of Fire', and 'Blade Runner' had penetrated deep in my mind.I still recall at age 11 listening over and over to The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper' album, less so for the music, and more so for all the sounds within it.Something had clicked, and my love for electronic music was cast.
It was in '89 that I had started to venture out into nightlife, quickly finding Acid House. As much as I loved the music, something was missing, then as if by magic, Blapps Posse's 'Bus It' happened, and I was instantly hooked on finding bigger, badder beats.Within a year, British Hip Hop had started to toughen up, and by the time Demon Boyz 'Jungle Dett' had arrived, the Hardcore/Jungle scene was in full swing.By this time I'd been deejaying for 2 years, as well as hopping all over the country on the weekends looking for all-nighters.'92 into '93 the Hardcore/Jungle sounds were shifting at such a rapid pace.Then somewhere toward the end of '93 I heard The Invisible Man's 'The Beginning' & DJ Solo's 'Darkage', and I knew I'd found my place.To this day I still think that this is where Drum & Bass was truly born, with the years '94 to '96 being the most incredible in production.There wasn't a week went by without there being a tune released that would make my jaw drop.Fast forward to '97 and Tech Step was born as a genre.I could not get my head around this at first, such was my love for the Amen Break. I even gave up buying records in the following year, and let go of both my (vast) record collection and my beloved 1210's.
Ironically in '97 I started on a Multimedia Tech course, solely for the purpose of studying Sound Engineering.I managed to put my first midi studio together, and started tinkering with the sounds in my head.For one reason or another nothing came, I think the love had gone at this point.The UK was going gaga over Speed Garage (which I hated with a passion!), and I just couldn't find the inspiration that had been there in the years before.
Fast forward to '09, and I again decide to start putting together a studio.I'd been listening to the deeper aspects of Drum & Bass for a long while again, even coming around to the direction that Tech Step had taken, and the dominance of the 2 Step structure, and the space within it's sound.But there was more.In the last 2 years I've seen so much new talent come into the scene, it's been both refreshing and inspiring.
The one constant thorn is of course 'Jump Up', which even though has technically been around for 15 years, in it's current form would never have been given the time of day way back when.It's almost as if in the last 2 years there has been a tangible shift away from this kiddy clap sound, with much experimentation at the darker end of the spectrum. This might be wishful thinking, but hey, maybe it's on it's way!!
This is the sound I have grown to love.It's the sound that reminds me of those aggressive acid trax that had us all in a trance.It's the raw sound of the Amen Break at it's ruffest & tuffest. Echoes and screams, haunting us through endless tunnels of sound.

There you will find current tracks (none of them fully mastered, so a little rough around the edges!), and over the next 2 years I will be giving every spare moment to pulling the sounds from within, and laying them down in the hope of bringing something new, all the while paying more than a passing glance to the raw energy of those blissful early moments when the Amen was king.
