Taeyang was a child actor at the age of 11. He acted in JinuSeans A-Yo music video[citation needed]. After that, he auditioned to join YG Family.

His rapping debut was in YG Familys second album in 2002. In 2003, he participated in Wheesungs second album, rapping on the track "Player". He performed with JinuSean, Swi.T, Lexy, Masta Wu, Se7en and YG Family, and took part in Wheesung, Gummy, Se7en and YG Family's One concerts.

He was scheduled to debut with G-Dragon as GDYB (for G-Dragon & YB Taekwon) in 2004, but never debuted or released an album. Hyun Suk announced that their debut was canceled in favor of forming a four-to-six-member group.

Even though he had previously trained to be a rapper, he debuted in Big Bang as a singer. He has been studying Japanese since 2004, in preparation for Big Bang's Japanese debut. After graduating high school, he and G-Dragon decided to take a year off before applying for college. He has been accepted at Daejin University in theater and film for 2008, and has mentioned wanting to become an actor.

Tae Yang was the first Big Bang member to release a solo album. HOT is the title of his first mini-album, which consists of six songs. The album hit stores May 22, 2008, with the singles "Prayer", featuring Teddy of 1TYM, and "Look Only at Me". By May 21, HOT had a record of 45,000 pre-produced albums,almost the same as the amount of Big Bang's album when it was released. The album was well received by fans and critics alike, and sold over 50,000 copies.

Taeyang will release his second solo album some time in early 2010. The first single from the album, "Where U At", was released on October 15. The lead single from the album, "Wedding Dress", was released on November 13.

Taeyang's digital single "Where U At" from his second full solo album (January 2010), was released on 15 October 2009. The digital single topped Mnet and Cyworld charts shortly after release on the same day, standing at #1. Originally, there were no plans to promote "Where U At". However, due to popular demand from fans, YG allowed a special one time performance of this song on SBS Inkigayo on October 25, 2009.
