Some old video of GPS & Vario assisted flight - early 2011 This was the version 1 flight controller using "Micro-Hexrotor" parts. The poor Pentax survives yet another flight based on blue-wire and vero-board - simply putting the video up for general interest and archiving, sorry it is a bit long winded but some comments in there for those who wish to understand a few of the details
Main things are vario for climb rate and GPS for positional velocity. With vario engaged middle throttle is hover, so pilot has no workload to hover at a fixed altitude. Similarly, central cyclic means quadrotor will hold position. Increasing/decreasing sticks will cause movement in that direction upto a present velocity - in this case set to 3ms for all directions. As a safety feature distance is clamped to ~100m altitude and 500m radius from point of take-off, this helps to keep pilot within suggested airspace regulations and preserves solid radio contact. Controller will auotmatically land on low battery or loss of radio signal, so I always get the Pentax back in one piece.
Sensors are fairly straight forward: barometer, GPS, compass, accelerometer and 3 gyroscopes. Algorithms are fairly complex and unique to this particular controller. The aim is to produce very smooth and easy flight control - my daughter was flying this when aged 5.
The camera is mounted on a simple pitch-only mount. There is some small servo jitter obvious in the hold.
Newer factory built controller now available from Webb Consultancy Ltd. It includes many additional features, newer sensors and improved performance.

Flight controller design by Webb Consultancy Ltd. Tri-rotor was just a simple test airframe - nothing special, 8x4" props, standard ESC's
