The reason it was difficult to start (more then normal) is because you left the key in the on position for too long, that keeps the fuel pump engaged and on a 99 it may have given too much gas or too much pressure.

Considering you hit a Mercedes, thats pretty good. I've seen these Taurus' get messed up good but always the occupants stay safe and thats the most important thing, a car is replaceable, people are not! I feel safe in the Taurus/Sables.
